The African elephant (loxodonta africana) could be EXTINCT in the wild in 15 years with approximately 100 animals dying each day.

The current population is around 600,00 with 38,000 dying each year from poaching, drought, habitat loss etc. A lift of the ivory ban and recent droughts have quickly reduced the populations in many parts of Africa.

A self sustaining captive population as backup is also not an option unless large financial commitments are made. Historically, elephants have been difficult to breed in captivity and require a lot of space/money to maintain.

Andrew this is great man! I'm sorry about the disappearing elephants, they'll be gone before you can taste one :(

I love your designs here. I also love the intricate detailing of the elephant's textures. Great work.

I agree with you, it's just a shame one of Earth's most beautiful, sensitive and majestic creatures is in danger of becoming extinct within our lifetime.

Black and white footage of Africa in those old Tarzan movies from the 1940s depicts herds of elephants that number in the hundreds! Now, we see herds in groups as small as three and five.

I like elephants too, recently I saw on Animal Planet like the mother-elephant with his sister helped for his son, drag out of a deep reservoir! It was very interesting!! I felt sorry for him!

Spectacular animal drawings as ever-perhaps a book of your work for charity could help?

The work that you do leaves me absolutely speechless:*
The way you break them down into simple shapes and stylize is simply beyond words.

Your elephants are as gorgeous as ever.

Man, i didn't realize it had gotten that bad that quickly since the ban lifted. I had read recently that the population in many areas of africa had actually been slowly increasing since the ban: the ban not stop poaching, but at least impreding it enough.

Either way, I would like to help somehow...
